Transferring within Tufts: Liberal Arts to Engineering

Transfer from the College of Liberal Arts to the School of Engineering

A Tufts student enrolled in the College of Liberal Arts may transfer to the School of Engineering provided certain requirements are met. To inquire about the process or to initiate a transfer, please contact the Tufts Engineering College Transition Advisor, Eliza Yuen. In order to get the best possible advice about Engineering classes and majors, please contact the College Transition Advisor at the beginning of the semester.

During the semester in which a student has applied to transfer internally into Tufts Engineering, the Engineering College Transition Advisor becomes the student's academic advisor. The transfer application will be evaluated at the end of the semester. If the requirements below are met, the transfer will be approved, SIS will be updated, and a faculty advisor in the selected major will be assigned.

Applying as a First Year Student

A student in the first or second semester of college study may transfer into Tufts Engineering at the end of a semester during which the following requirements are met.

  • An application to transfer was submitted to the Engineering College Transitional Advisor by the last day of the exam period,
  • The student ends the term registered in 4 courses,
  • The student obtains grades of C- or higher in 3 full-credit courses designated SoE-Mathematics, SoE Natural Sciences, or SoE-Engineering, and
  • The student has satisfied the Mathematics Standard and Science Standard (see below).
Applying as a Sophomore

A student in the third or fourth semester of college study may transfer into Tufts Engineering at the end of a semester in which the following requirements are met.

  • An application to transfer was submitted to the Engineering College Transition Advisor by the last day of the exam period,
  • The student ends the term registered in 5 courses,
  • The student obtains grades of C- or higher in 4 full-credit courses designated SoE-Mathematics, SoE Natural Sciences, or SoE-Engineering,
  • The student has satisfied the Mathematics Standard and Science Standard (see below), and
  • The student has satisfied the Engineering Standard (see below).
Applying as a Junior or Senior

A student in the fifth or higher semester of college study may not transfer into Tufts Engineering without meeting the requirements for Sophomore applicants (above) and supplying written documentation from a parent or financial aid officer acknowledging that financial support is available beyond 8 semesters. Before transferring into Tufts Engineering, the student should estimate an approximate graduation date in consultation with the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Advising for Engineering.
