Past Summer Scholars

Spotlight Scholar: Arturo Muñoz
Arturo A. Muñoz, a Educational Studies and Psychology major at Tufts, was selected to receive a 2017 National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) Fellowship in the Technology Education category. The GRFP provides three years of financial support within a five-year fellowship period to students pursuing research-based master's and doctoral degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) or in STEM education. The program also provides Fellows with funded opportunities for professional development and for global research collaborations. In his GRFP application, Arturo proposed a critical Makerspace ethnography that considers how Makerspaces might be differently and more equitably designed, particularly on pedagogical and epistemic levels, through immigrant youth’s narrated understandings about how they experience the sociopolitical dimensions of learning in Makerspaces. Arturo intends to use the Fellowship support to pursue his proposed line of inquiry in Northwestern University’s Learning Sciences PhD program, beginning Fall 2017.

During his undergraduate career at Tufts, Arturo conducted independent and collaborative research across the Departments of Education and Psychology. Under the advisement of Professor Sabina Vaught and with support from the Summer Scholars Program at Tufts, Arturo designed and carried out an independent critical qualitative study of a high school STEM classroom. Arturo also worked alongside Professor Brian Gravel to carry out preliminary ethnographic data collection at a high school Makerspace. Arturo, as an undergraduate research assistant, also supports the work of doctoral students in Professor Samuel Sommers’ Diversity and Intergroup Relations Lab. The support that Arturo has received from his faculty and research advisors, from the Summer Scholars Program, from his colleagues, and from his family helped him develop the intellectual and methodological foundations he needs to carry out rigorous research at the doctoral level.
