Billing for Health Services

Billing for Health Services and Specialty Providers

All Medical care is confidential. Information is not provided without your signed consent. The Health Services Business Office can provide assistance with billing matters.

Student Health Insurance

If you have Student Health Insurance most things done at Health Service are covered 100%. Items that may not be covered are travel Immunizations and or requirements for employment or the Peace Corps. You can contact the Billing Office at 617-627-3350 for further information.

If you want to grant us permission to talk to your parents or someone about you, you can download a copy of the Personal Representative Appointment form from the United Healthcare University Insurance page.

Private Insurance

Some tests cannot be done at the Health Services Clinical Laboratory.  We can collect the specimen and send it to Quest Diagnostics (Quest) for evaluation.  Labs done by Quest are billed directly to the insurance company.

Tests that are performed in-house are not sent to Quest and are billed to your SIS account. To protect your confidentiality, any charges applied to your Tuition Bill will be listed simply as "Health Service charge" with no further detail. Once the charge appears on your SIS account, you can download and print your Health Service Statement from the Patient Portal to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement. If you want to avoid receiving a Tuition Bill, you can pay directly at the Bursar's Office

If the lab work is done outside of Tufts Health Service, please see below.

Reimbursements from Your Insurance Company

Please check with you insurance company that they can reimburse you for services provided by out-of-network providers. In our experience, Mass Health does not reimburse for services rendered by out-of-network providers.

If you wish to be reimbursed by your insurance for services received at our office, you can download the invoice from the Portal. Reimbursements are evaluated by the insurance company on a case-by-case basis and cannot be guaranteed.

Explanation of Benefits (EOB)

Every time an insurance company receives a bill from a provider for services rendered to a covered individual, the insurance company generates a statement, also known as an Explanation of Benefits (EOB), to the patient or policy holder (usually a parent) explaining what medical treatments and/or services were paid for on their behalf and what portion is the patient responsibility.

If you have Student Insurance, you can access your EOB through the United Healthcare University Insurance page.

Please review a sample EOB and instructions on how to read an EOB or watch the following "how-to" video.

If you do not have Student Insurance, you can call your insurance company for more information on what is included in your EOB. All insurance companies are different.  Some insurance companies provide a statement to the policy holder (usually a parent) detailing the services received.   If you need further assistance you can contact the Health Services Business Office 617-627-3350.

Financial Assistance

The FIRST Resource Center offers Financial Resources to assist students with medical costs.

Billing for Clinical Laboratory Tests

Tests Sent to Quest Diagnostics

Some tests cannot be done at the Health Services Clinical Laboratory.  We can collect the specimen and send it to Quest Diagnostics (Quest) for evaluation.  Labs done by Quest are billed directly to the insurance company.

Check with your insurance company if you can use Quest as an "in-network" clinical laboratory, to ensure your tests are covered and paid for by the insurance company. If Quest is not an "in-network" provider with your insurance, ask your insurance company for providers in the area and call the Business Office if you need further assistance.

"Self-Pay" for Clinical Laboratory Services through Quest Diagnostics

If you do not want laboratory services to be billed to your insurance company you must notify your clinician and laboratory personnel. They will identify your order and specimen as "self-pay".  Once Quest Diagnostics receives it, you will be responsible for paying 100% of the charges billed.

You can view and pay your invoice online. Forms of payment accepted are check and all major credit cards.

Quest is committed to providing clinical laboratory services regardless of your ability to pay. Through the Patient Assistance Program, Quest tailors solutions for uninsured or underinsured patients based on individual circumstances and may adjust some or all laboratory charges if you cannot afford to pay for your testing.

For billing inquiries, you can contact Quest Diagnostics at 1-844-476-7839 or visit their website.

Lab Testing Done at Health Services ("in-house")

Some tests can be performed at Health Service and allows our clinician to receive results faster and start treatment faster.  When tests are done "in-house", they are billed to the student's SIS account.

Please review the section "Reimbursement from your Insurance Company" for more details.
