Visa Information

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security requires that all non-U.S. citizens who intend to study in the U.S. obtain a student visa before enrolling. We recommend beginning the visa application process at least 8 weeks before your arrival in the US, as it can take a while to receive the visa. Applicants to our programs are routinely successful in acquiring F-1 student visas.

Visa Application Process

Submit Passport Copy and Financial Statement to Tufts IPP

The first step in the visa process is to upload to the online portal your passport identification page and a financial statement with proof of sufficient funds to cover tuition and living expenses for the period of your intended study. This should be in the form of a statement or letter from your bank or the bank of the individual sponsoring you. We will then issue you an I-20 document to be used in your visa application.

Pay the SEVIS Fee

All non-immigrant students are required to register with the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS), a database maintained by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. SEVIS automates the manual data collection process that schools and exchange visitor programs utilize to gather information on their students, scholars, and exchange visitors.

When you apply for a student visa, you will pay a $200 SEVIS application fee to the US Department of Homeland Security by submitting a I-901 form online. Please note, this fee may vary according to your country of origin.

Schedule Your Visa Interview

Approximately 90 days before the start of your program, you should schedule an interview with the U.S. embassy or consulate in your country to apply for your F-1 visa. You will be required to pay a nonimmigrant visa application processing fee of approximately $160.

Complete Your Online Visa Application

Before your visa interview, you should complete the Nonimmigrant Visa Application DS-160. Please note that a separate form is required for children even if they are included in a parent’s passport.

Attend Your Visa Interview

You are required to bring the following materials to your visa interview:

  • Your signed I-20 form (three pages)
  • Your completed Visa Application DS-160
  • A receipt for your visa application processing fee
  • A receipt for your SEVIS fee

You may also be asked to show:

  • Transcripts and diplomas from previous institutions attended
  • Financial statements with proof of sufficient funds for tuition and living expenses for the period of your intended study. This may include tax documents, as well as bank statements.

Travel Restrictions

According to F-1 visa regulations, students can travel to the US up to 30 days before the start of their academic program. Students can remain in the US up to 60 days after the completion of their summer program, and many students choose to travel or visit family after the program for 1-2 weeks. Please note that you will not be permitted to stay in the Tufts residence halls after the conclusion of your program.

Visa Transfers

Transfer to Tufts

If you are currently a student in F-1 status at a U.S. institution and would like to transfer to Tufts sponsorship, please complete the International Student Transfer Form and follow the directions to submit it to our office.

If you are already in the United States on a B-1 or B-2 visa, you will need to apply for a change of status before you can enroll in our programs. This process may take weeks, and, in many cases, you may be required to return to your home country to receive your F-1 student visa. Please contact our office if you have specific questions about these new requirements and the director will be able to advise you.

Transfer from Tufts

If you plan to transfer to another US institution after completing one of our programs, you will need to transfer your immigration sponsorship from Tufts to your new school.

To do this, simply request and complete a transfer form for your new institution and bring it to our office. We will complete the transfer at the conclusion of your program in August. There is no fee for this service.
