Curriculum and Activities

Our faculty will draw upon the unique contributions and creativity each student brings to the classroom.  Should you need additional support, faculty are available for individual appointments outside of class. Our program staff provide evening tutoring to assist with homework assignments and plan activities to explore American culture.

Core Class

In your core class you will focus on effective communication in English, working to strengthen your speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. This course meets every morning, Monday - Friday, for 2 hours and 20 minutes. You will be grouped in small classes (under 18 students) according to English ability (beginner/intermediate/advanced).

Special Interest Elective

In your elective class you will build confidence and ease with English by focusing on a topic that interests you. This one-hour class meets after your core class Monday-Friday. Topics change from year to year. Previous topics have included:

  • Current Events
  • American Idioms and Culture
  • History and Culture of Boston
  • TOEFL Preparation
  • Novel Reading

Discover America Excursions

Each week on Wednesday afternoons your instructors will lead off-campus excursions to explore important American institutions. These experiences will help you will acquire an in-depth knowledge of American culture.

Students in the 4-Week program are required to attend at least one excursion. Students in the 6-Week program are required to attend at least two excursions.

Afternoon Workshop

All students are invited to participate in the optional afternoon workshop for an additional fee. The workshop meets four afternoons a week and allows for focused study in the following areas:

  • Pronunciation
  • Speaking
  • Vocabulary
  • Writing Skills
  • Cross-cultural Communication

Students who choose this option will not participate in the afternoon excursions on those days.
