Tufts Students,

Welcome back to campus! As you embark on a new school year, we're excited to be able to share with you some enhancements for students at Tufts regarding Preferred Name and Pronouns in the Student Information System (SIS).

In July, Tufts announced the adoption of a Preferred Name Policy for all members of the Tufts community allowing the selection of a preferred name on certain university systems—including the White Pages and email, as well as on class and grade rosters—in place of their legal name (also called "Primary Name" in SIS).  You may wish to take advantage of this option in a variety of circumstances, including:

  • to select a name that better reflects your gender identity;
  • to select a name that better reflects your marital status (married name, maiden name, hyphenated name, etc.); and/or
  • to select a nickname, professional name or other variant that better reflects your personal identity.

Since January 2016, students have been able to select a preferred name in SIS. Effective this summer, you are also able to select a preferred pronoun series, which will be available to your professors and advisors.

What this means to you
If you wish to select a “preferred name” and/or “pronoun series” (i.e. him, his, he), the SIS system has functionality to enable you to do this. This information will be viewable on class rosters, grade reports, and advisor screens. By updating this information before or at the start of the semester, your professor will be able to see your preferences. You should notify your professors/advisors if you update your preferred name or pronouns mid-semester.

Get started
There are a few key resources available to you to get started implementing your Preferred Name and/or Pronoun at Tufts.

  • Pronoun Primer  – Check out this document to learn more about what pronouns are, how they affect you, how they are being used, why they are important and where you can get support if needed.
  • Online Guide in SIS – This document will walk you thru how-to setup your preferred name and/or pronouns in SIS.

If you have any questions about the policy, please contact Jennifer Magrone in the Office of Equal Opportunity at 617-627-4297 or Hope Denese Freeman in the LGBT Center at 617-627-3817.  If you have questions or need help setting up your preferences in SIS, please contact the Tufts Technology Services (TTS) Service Desk at 617-627-3376 or

Have a great year!
