A message from the Director of the LGBT Center

October 24, 2018

Several news and media outlets have reported this week that transgender and non-binary individuals may be erased from the government’s definition of gender. While this policy has not been officially announced or implemented, we feel compelled to call out what would be a gross misuse of power if such a change were implemented.

  • We recognize trans rights as human rights.
  • We recognize that trans and non-binary people deserve protection, assurance, and respect.
  • We recognize that it is important for cisgender people to use their privilege to lift up trans and non-binary voices -- not to speak over or for trans or non-binary people, but to center and amplify their voices.
  • We recognize that educating ourselves and others is critical to combating misinformation and intolerance.
  • We recognize the importance of electing officials who reflect our values.

At the Tufts LGBT Center, we will continue to love, support, and fight for the rights of trans and non-binary people. We encourage you to contact us if we can provide information or assistance of any kind. For those who may be interested, we also encourage you to attend the Rally for Transgender Rights at Boston Common on Sunday, October 28 beginning at 1 p.m., and to visit the website for the National Center for Transgender Equality for updates.

Finally, we want to remind all students of the following Tufts resources:

In solidarity,

Hope Freeman
Director, LGBT Center
