Miller/Houston Renovation

General Overview

Miller and Houston Halls, built in 1959 and 1962 respectively, are undergoing substantial renovations from May 2018 - August 2019. Included in the renovations are:

  • Accessibility upgrades
  • New elevators, accessible common spaces, and rest rooms through the building
  • Address all deferred maintenance items
  • Safety and building code upgrades
  • Improvements to student life (e.g., common areas, event space, new furniture)
  • Improved landscape around the buildings and conversion of the roads in front of the buildings into pedestrian paths
  • Sustainable/energy saving improvements
  • Additional safety and security items

Construction Timeline

  • Miller Hall's East wing will be complete in Summer 2018 (side closest to Lane Hall).
  • Work will continue in Miller Hall's West wing during the Fall 2018 semester, and while we expect periods of noise around the building, demolition/loudest construction will take place before students arrive in the fall.
  • Miller Hall will be complete as of December 2018.
  • Houston Hall will receive some renovations in Summer 2018, but will be fully occupied during the Fall 2018 semester.
  • Students on the East wing of Houston Hall during the fall semester will be moved to the (renovated) West wing of Miller Hall by a professional moving team at the end of the fall semester.
  • The East wing of Houston Hall will then begin renovations through the Spring 2019 semester. Major demolition/loudest construction will take place over winter break, spring break and summer session - as to minimize any disturbance to the students living in the West wing of Houston Hall during the spring semester.

Houston-to-Miller Moving Process

Residential Life and Residential Facilities will be holding information sessions during the fall semester for all students moving from Houston to Miller at the end of the fall finals period. Included in these sessions will be helpful tips on how to properly pack in advance of the move, how to label your belongings properly, a timeline for belongings to move to Miller, etc. Info Sessions will be held in the Houston Hall lounge (basement level), and the dates/times will be communicated via postings and emails to student's accounts.

Our goal is to make the move process as easy as possible for our students!

All construction areas will be completely separated from student living areas. Should construction personnel need access to the residential areas of each building, they are required to be escorted by Tufts University staff.

Students are not permitted in construction areas at any time. Any student found to be entering construction areas will be referred through the student conduct process for unauthorized access violations.
