Housing and Lottery Information

Below is full information about housing and options for living on campus as a returning student for the 2017 – 2018 academic year. Continuing undergraduate students may select a room with a roommate or a single assignment, and they have the opportunity to select housing within our 16 specialized theme houses, Metcalf Hall, Sophia Gordon Apartments, Hillside Apartments, Latin Way Apartments, and various residence halls.

In order to prepare for selecting a room for the upcoming academic year, please read this information thoroughly and attend a housing information session. (Sessions will be advertised in early February.)

General Information

Housing Selection Process
  • Students will apply for the various lotteries online via the Housing Portal.
  • All students will receive an email when each lottery is open with instructions for applying.
  • Selection times will be based on the On-Campus Housing Lottery Calendar.
  • Returning students need to create a separate application to apply for each specific lottery.
  • If you are applying as a group, all members must complete their own application.
  • If you do not get an appointment time for a particular lottery, this means you do not qualify for that lottery.  You will then need to proceed through other lotteries and create a new application.
  • Once you sign up for housing, you have completed the lottery process and cannot change or cancel your housing assignment to participate in other lotteries.
General Tips for the Lottery
  • When signing up as a group, make sure the group leader is available to make the final selections for others in the group.
  • Have more than one option in mind for your housing preferences.
  • Read all material that is distributed during the lottery period.
  • Attend a Lottery Information Session on Wednesday, February 1, 12 - 1 p.m. in Dewick MacPhie Dining Hall or Thursday, February, 5 - 6 p.m. in Carmichael Dining Hall
  • Stop by the Office of Residential Life and Learning during Open Hours, every Friday, 1 – 4 p.m.
Residency Requirement and Availability

There are a wide variety of housing options available to enrolled returning undergraduates. All returning first-years (rising sophomores) are required to live in University housing.  There is only one exception to the two-year Residency Requirement:

  • You are a rising Sophomore accepted to live in a Fraternity/Sorority house.  (Once accepted, you cannot participate in the housing lottery.)

Rising Seniors are given priority to select from available housing not in reserve for Sophomores.

Rising Juniors are not guaranteed on-campus housing, but can participate in the lottery based on availability.  As a rising Junior, if you are unable to select an assignment during the lottery period, you will be able to go on a waitlist

Sophia Gordon Apartments

  • This selection period in Sophia Gordon is only available for seniors looking to fill a 4-person suite with a group.
  • Sophia Gordon has many unique features, including a large multipurpose room with theatre space, a second-floor mezzanine, enclosed study lounges, bike storage, and elevators.

Wren Hall and Haskell Suites

  • Wren and Haskell Halls are available for rising sophomores who apply in 5-person groups during this selection period.
General Apartments (February 28 - March 2)

On-campus apartments are available for students who apply in groups of 2, 3, 4, or 6 students.  Each unit has its own kitchen, bathroom, and common area.  On-campus apartment residents are not required to purchase a university meal plan.

The two important factors in selecting an apartment are your roommates and the specific apartment layout.  Some apartments have only double rooms, while most have a combination of singles and doubles.

Please note: Students who sign up for apartments as a group are responsible for their own cleaning.

Apartments are selected in lottery number order using the average of all applicants’ numbers.  If a member of your apartment cancels out of the apartment for any other reason than to study abroad, the entire group will lose the apartment.  If a vacancy occurs in an apartment due to studying abroad, the group will have 72 hours to fill the space with a student who already has housing on-campus.  If the group cannot fill the space, the ORLL will fill the space.
