Recommended Programs

The following programs are currently recommended for transfer credit toward a Tufts degree as of September 1, 2016. You should use this list as your starting point in researching suitable options; it represents a wide range of programs that will meet almost any academic need at Tufts, and in which Tufts undergraduates have a history of successful participation. (Please note that the recommendation applies to the individual programs listed, not to all programs offered by the sponsoring provider.) The column at the right shows the period in which participation is usually possible ("F" = fall, "S" = spring, and "Y" = full year). But it remains your responsibility to ascertain that the academic portion of the program is a minimum of 13 weeks per semester, and to obtain approval from the appropriate Tufts academic department for each course for which you wish to transfer credit.

You may enroll in a foreign university either directly or through the recommended program providers on this list (e.g., University of Melbourne through Arcadia University). You may also enroll directly in a foreign accredited, degree-granting university that does not appear on this list, as long as the semester is of the required 13 full weeks (consult beforehand with the Office of Programs Abroad to confirm that a petition will not be required). This exception is not extended to enrollment in institutions in non-English-speaking countries at which many or all of the available classes are taught in English, or largely to visiting students only.

Approval of a leave of absence to study abroad applies to transfer of academic credit only; it does not imply an evaluation of current security conditions in the country in question. For updated safety information, contact the program provider and consult the U.S. State Department websiteStudy abroad in countries with a U.S. State Department Travel Warning in effect is subject to review by Tufts' Travel Review Committee. You should notify the Foreign Study Advisor by March 1 for fall semester or October 1 for spring semester if you intend to study in such a country. U.S. State Department Travel Warnings can come into effect at any time; therefore, the Travel Review Committee reserves the right to review study-abroad plans as needed.

If, after thoroughly researching the programs on the recommended list, you decide that your academic needs are better met by a program that is not on the list, you must petition for approval. To do so, you must first meet with the Foreign Study Advisor to discuss the program and the petition process; a letter of support from a faculty member in your major department will be required. Petitions are due March 1 for fall/full-year programs, and October 1 for spring programs.
