Dental Medicine

Tufts University School of Dental Medicine (TUSDM) offers Tufts undergraduates an opportunity to apply for admission in the spring of their sophomore year. A limited number of students are admitted through the Early Assurance Program and guaranteed a space in the dental school once they graduate, provided they maintain a minimum GPA, earn minimum DAT scores, and attend a formal interview during the fall of their senior year.

Program Requirements

  • To apply for early assurance, you are expected to complete two semesters of biology and two semesters of chemistry by the end of sophomore year.
  • If admitted, you must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.4 and a minimum cumulative science GPA of 3.4. If you do not meet the minimum GPA requirements, the admissions committee may elect to withdraw you from the program.
  • Remaining courses include one semester of organic chemistry with laboratory, two semesters of physics with laboratory, biochemistry and two biology electives numbered above 13 and 14.
  • We strongly encourage you to take all prerequisite courses at Tufts. Special approval must be given for prerequisite courses completed at another institution.
  • You will need to take the DAT exam and will be expected to receive scores of at least 20 on the Academic Average, 19 on the Perceptual Ability, 21 on the Reading Comprehension, and 20 on Total Science sections.
  • To receive final acceptance to TUSDM, you must meet all the same requirements of admitted students for your class year. These include a criminal background check and completed dean’s Certification of Disciplinary History Form.

Application Process

  1. The Early Assurance Application will be posted to the Health Professions website when available (typically in spring)
  2. The Dental School must receive your application by the set deadline (will be communicated on the website, Canvas course and Health E News).
  3. You will need two faculty letters of recommendation, with at least one from a basic science faculty member
  4. The Dental School will invite competitive applicants to a virtual interview over the summer
  5. Decision letters will be mailed in late summer after spring grades are received
  6. If you apply, you’ll be required to submit an official transcript to the Office of Admissions at TUSDM at the conclusion of each semester. We will notify in writing of your status after we have received your transcript
  7. Submit your DAT scores no later than November 1 of the year you wish to matriculate at the Dental School
  8. Complete an Associated American Dental Schools Application Service (AADSAS) application during the summer before your senior year. The application must be complete by September 1 of your senior year
  9. After we have received your official DAT scores and verified that they meet the minimum requirements, we will schedule a formal final interview with you at TUSDM during the fall of your senior year
