What do you do as an intern at this organization?

I work with a small team to improve existing data structures specific to the company. I was given a subsection of the project that I could work on mostly independently without having to integrate very much with the entire structure of the company. This let me jump right into work instead of getting oriented for the first few weeks, which is nice as that would have taken up a significant portion of the internship. There are occasional team meetings where we discuss the our work and look to other people on the team for advice.

How did you find this internship?

Someone I knew from a past job put me in contact with HR.

What do you enjoy most about your internship?

The people are very welcoming, and I'm with a small team. I actually feel like I'm contributing to projects and feel less like an intern and more like an actual employee. It's very different from the coding I'm used to, so I get to learn quite a bit from the people I'm working with and the project I'm working on.

What do you find challenging?

It isn't as exciting as schoolwork. There's much more setting up and debugging than designing algorithms; sometimes it's a fair amount of the CS equivalent of grunt work. Also, the finance world isn't the best at being a community.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?

Try to talk to as many people as you can and actually get to know them. As for applications, I don't think there is a hard deadline. I got my job on the later side, but it doesn't hurt to start early.
