What do you do as an intern at this organization?
As a Summer Game intern at Booz Allen, I worked with a team of four other interns to build a graph based anomaly detection system. The program used artificial intelligence and machine learning to better identify cyber threats.

How did you find this internship?
Through individual research on different consulting companies.

What do you enjoy most about your internship?
I enjoyed being able to explore the project manager role and I loved gaining insight into the company and its full time employees. Booz Allen is truly committed to both being at the cutting-edge of technology solutions and allowing its employees to have work life balance. You can really choose who you want to be in the company - you can stay focused on your own tasks and enjoy your life outside of work or you can try to fast track yourself in the company roles you want to have/be in different leadership roles. There are also many opportunities to become involved with groups both within and outside the company (for example, Women in Data Science)

What do you find challenging?
I thought the hands-off management style I experienced was a true challenge. Unlike college, there is no “spec” that tells you what to do - no list of specific requirements and actions you need to take. That allows you a lot of freedom and space for initiative, but it can be a double edged sword - especially if you’re dealing with concepts you have never encountered before.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?
Application deadline is about October/November, but they will get back to you a while after (January-February). Take advantage of company resources such as learning websites, try to network as much as possible to gain insight into other roles at the company and what it’s like to work there full time, become involved with communities within the company. Be involved, but never forget to keep your focus on your main goal and project.
