What do you do as an intern at this organization?

As the activities director at ELC's junior program at Wheelock College, I organized afternoon, evening and weekend activities in the Boston area for summer program participants age 11-17. I made and confirmed reservations for activities ranging from duck tours to museum visits and educational opportunities, and I organized all necessary transportation. I also made student group rosters for each week, made informational packets for counselors and other staff and advertised opportunities to students. Each day I made contact with local vendors to secure group reservations for our students, liaised with campus staff regarding activity planning and made announcements to students. I also was in charge of purchasing any materials needed for activities and managing the activities budget.

How did you find this internship?

Jumbo Jobs

What do you enjoy most about your internship?

The most rewarding aspect of my internship was interacting directly with students. It was great to hear feedback from them and see them having fun during activities I had planned. It also made the job more exciting to be able to speak with students about their interests and adapt my planning around their suggestions.

What do you find challenging?

The aspect that I found most challenging was the fast-paced, constantly changing nature of the job. Students would sometimes ask to switch activity groups last minute, or the weather would cause an activity to be cancelled. This required a mindset that was always thinking one step ahead and planning proactively so that I had flexibility if any issues arose.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?

The best advice I could give to someone in a position such as this one that requires event and activity planning is to be flexible and don't sweat the things that you cannot change. Plan ahead and plan early so that you have backup options, but also remember that there will be things that don't go exactly as intended due to unforeseeable circumstances and that's okay. What is more important than having every day go perfectly is learning from past experience and improving with time.
