Psychiatric Evaluations

Psychiatric Medication Evaluation

COVID-19 Update (Updated 5/8/20): Please visit our COVID-19 Updates page for more information.

At Tufts Counseling and Mental Health Service (CMHS), we offer psychiatric services for Tufts students as an adjunct to counseling. To have your medication managed by our psychiatry service, you must be actively participating in counseling or psychotherapy. Because our counseling services are available for brief interventions only, you will probably need to seek ongoing treatment from a therapist in the community. COVID-19 has necessitated the use of telemedicine for all treatments at CMHS.  Due to licensing and other restrictions, psychiatric care is being initiated only for students that are current residents of Massachusetts.

You will need a referral to our psychiatric service either through the CMHS counseling service or an off-campus therapist you are currently seeing.

  • If you are being seen by a therapist at CMHS and would like to have a psychiatric assessment, please speak to your therapist and they will discuss the referral process with you.
  • If you are currently being seen by an off-campus therapist, and would like to be referred for a Psychiatric Assessment for a new medication evaluation or for ongoing medication management, please have them fill out the referral form (link below) and fax (617-627-3019) or mail it to us. Once we receive and review the form, we will contact you to schedule an appointment.

If you have a stable and well-controlled mental health issue, including ADHD, and currently receive medication prescribed by a clinician at home, we strongly encourage you to continue your treatment with your provider at home if you can.

We do not provide diagnostic evaluations for ADD/ADHD.

  • Initial evaluation: no charge
  • Most medication follow-up visits (20-30 minutes) are billed at $100

Although we do not bill insurance directly, we will send you an itemized medical bill to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement. The charges will go on your tuition bill, unless you would like to pay at the time of service. To protect your confidentiality, the charge on the tuition bill will be listed as a Health Service charge.

We do not accept credit cards.

Concerns about payment should not be a barrier to seeking needed services. Please let your referring provider know if you will have trouble paying the initial fee.
