International STEM Scholars Program

Tufts Summer Institute for International STEM Scholars program will prepare you for graduate STEM programs by providing focused training in academic speaking and research writing. You’ll earn Tufts University credits through a special course taught by faculty from Tufts School of Engineering. During the six-week program, you will build skills to thrive in graduate school and the workplace.

Program Requirements

To apply for this program you must have:

  • A completed undergraduate degree
  • An intention to pursue STEM-related studies at a university or college
  • A minimum TOEFL score of 71 (internet) or 197 (computer)

Note that priority will be given to incoming Tufts M.S. students.

Program Cost

Application Fee - $65, collected at time of application

Tuition Deposit - $100, collected at the time of application
This deposit is deducted from the total tuition cost, but is not refundable if you choose to withdraw your application.

Residential Students - $11,315
The all-inclusive fee includes tuition, housing in a double room, 20 meals a week, traveler’s health insurance, Airport Transfers, activities. Single rooms are available for an additional cost of $450.

Commuter Students - $9,015
The all-inclusive fee includes tuition for both courses, lunch Monday-Friday, traveler’s insurance, activities, and access to Tufts facilities on campus.

Program Curriculum

English Language Course

This specialized ESL course has two main focuses: academic speaking and research writing. You will work to develop and refine your language skills for teamwork, discussions, debates, and other verbal interactions, and learn to construct a graduate-level research paper.

Communications for Technical Professionals

In your course, you will learn to make conscious communications decisions, use the principles of effective written and oral communication, and tailor messages to workplace audiences. Throughout the course, you will practice the skills needed to create and give effective presentations. This course consists of 3 semester credit hours that can be applied toward the Tufts M.S. degree or transferred to another program.

Weekly Workshop

During the weekly workshop, you will meet with instructors from both courses to review key concepts and receive focused support in a more informal classroom setting.

Office Hours & Tutoring

Should you need additional support, our program staff can arrange one-on-one office hours or tutoring where you can receive individual feedback to strengthen listening, note-taking, writing, and seminar presentation skills.

Program Activities

Discover America

Summer Institute STEM Scholars are invited to participate in the Discover America excursions led by instructors each Wednesday. Past Discover America excursions have included visits to the DeCordova Art Museum and Sculpture Park, Lowell Mills National Historical Park, John Joseph Moakley Federal Court House, Boston Tea Party Museum and Ships and Fenway Stadium - Home of the Boston Red Sox. 

Weekend Excursions

Activities and excursions in and around the Greater Boston area are scheduled each weekend to local beaches, shopping outlets, museums, and community events.
