First-Year Student Assignment Process

Incoming First-Year students are notified in late May when the Housing Application is available to complete via their SIS Portal (SIS > Student Living > Housing). The housing application is an opportunity for students to indicate their living preferences in order to get matched with a great roommate or roommates! Students are not able to request specific students as roommates; our system matches students based on their preferences from their housing application.

Housing assignments are typically sent to student emails by July 1st along with roommate(s) contact information. We encourage incoming first-year students to start building the foundation for a great roommate relationship as soon as possible!

Beacon Street Residence Halls

During the 2021–22 academic year, Tufts will be housing members of the SMFA Class of 2025 in our Brookline residential spaces (1023, 1025, and 1047 Beacon Street). These residence halls were closed during the 2020–21 year due to the COVID pandemic and because SMFA courses were remote, so SMFA in-person students lived on the Medford/Somerville campus. However, this year, with the intention of courses taking place in person, we will resume housing approximately 70 first-year BFA students in the Beacon Street brownstones. Rising sophomore BFA students will live on the Medford/Somerville campus during the 2021–2022 academic year per the University's residency requirement.

Transfer Student Assignment Process

Incoming Transfer students, while not always guaranteed housing, are placed by Residential Life in one of our residential halls with students of their class year (whenever possible) or with other transfer students. Transfer students are typically assigned at the end of June or early July. Housing assignments are sent to student emails by mid-July with any roommate contact information. We encourage incoming transfer students to get in contact with their roommates as soon as possible!

Continuing Student Assignment Process

Rising Sophomore students are required to live on-campus. Rising Juniors and Seniors are not guaranteed housing. All students should apply for housing in early December (dates to be announced) if they intend to live on-campus for the following academic year. For more information regarding how the housing application and lottery process works, check out our website on that!

Graduate Student Assignment Process

Graduate Students for Arts, Sciences and Engineering are invited to apply for housing in April for the upcoming academic year. Since on-campus housing is limited for graduate students, all applicants are assigned housing through a random lottery. Within the graduate housing application, students may indicate their preference for room type.

The graduate housing application is currently available by logging in to your Univeristy SIS Account. Students interested will need to submit an application via our Housing Portal and will be able to select from available spaces beginning in early June.
