Recommended Programs

The following semester- and year-long programs are currently recommended for transfer credit toward a Tufts degree as of September 1, 2019. You should use this list as your starting point in researching suitable options; it represents a wide range of programs that will meet almost any academic need at Tufts, and in which Tufts undergraduates have a history of successful participation. (Please note that the recommendation applies to the individual programs listed, not to all programs offered by the sponsoring provider.) The column at the right shows the period in which participation is usually possible ("F" = fall, "S" = spring, and "Y" = full year). But it remains your responsibility to ascertain that the academic portion of the program is a minimum of 13 weeks per semester, and to obtain approval from the appropriate Tufts academic department for each course for which you wish to transfer credit. If you are looking to study abroad in the summer, you may wish to consider options through Tufts; alternatively, many of the program providers listed below offer summer-term programs which may be suitable to your needs. Read more about policies regarding summer- and winter-term study abroad, as well as about internships abroad.

Petition process: If, after thoroughly researching the programs on the recommended list, you decide that your academic needs are better met by a program or university that is not on the list, you must petition for approval. To do so, you must first meet with the Foreign Study Advisor to discuss the program and the petition process. Petitions are due March 1 for fall/full-year programs, and October 1 for spring programs. A letter of support from a faculty member in your major department will be required.

Before reviewing the list below, please bear in mind the following:

  • Students wishing to study abroad at a university with which Tufts Programs Abroad partners (for instance: UCL, Sciences Po Paris, etc.) may only do so through Tufts Programs Abroad. It is therefore not possible to study at one of our partner institutions either directly or through a non-Tufts provider such as Arcadia or IFSA-Butler.

Approval of a leave of absence to study abroad applies to transfer of academic credit only; it does not imply an evaluation of current security conditions in the country in question. For updated safety information, contact the program provider and consult the U.S. State Department websiteStudy abroad in countries with a U.S. State Department Travel Advisory level 3 or 4 in effect is subject to review by Tufts' International Travel Review Committee. You should notify the Foreign Study Advisor by March 1 for fall semester or October 1 for spring semester if you intend to study in such a country. U.S. State Department Travel Advisories can change at any time; therefore, the International Travel Review Committee reserves the right to review study-abroad plans as needed.
