About

Join the Africana Center this Spring Break for a trip of a lifetime! We will be going to the Upper East Region of Ghana to connect with the land and learn more about Indigeneity. On the trip you'll take part in shea butter processing, cook with women in the community, explore seed processing, and learn about the essence of preserving Indigenous food systems. You will also be connected to local food culture in Ghana, Indigenous knowledge and wellness, and the culture of cooking and learning.

Details

  • The trip takes during the university Spring Break, from March 19 to 28. Exact travel itinerary will be shared with participants upon finalization. We anticipate four travel days, five days of learning in the village, and one excursion/fun day. There will also be several pre-departure meetings on campus during the fall and spring semesters to be in community with one another and get familiar with the program and schedule.

  • The cost is $3,500 per person. However, the Africana Center will subsidize a portion of the trip for those with demonstrated need. The participation fee includes international and domestic airfare, lodging, meals, cultural experiences, and excursions. Once accepted, each participant will make a deposit to secure their place in late October. The balance will be due by November 20th.

  • Students are responsible for securing the travel documents and health requirements necessary to enter Ghana:

    • Passport
    • Yellow Fever Vaccine
    • Visas (support will be provided)

The Africana Center will provide accepted participants with additional guidance and deadlines during the pre-departure process. However, students are ultimately responsible for completing required travel documentation by the established deadlines.

  • When you accept your position, you will be asked to pay the non-refundable deposit and with that we will start making flight and trip arrangements. If you decide not to participate before the trip is paid for in full, we might be able to give your spot to someone on the waitlist but please note all money put forth is non-refundable. Students will be covered by On-Call International. If you are no longer able to attend, write to us at africana@tufts.edu
