Dental Coverage

If you’re enrolled in the Tufts Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) through UHCSR, you have limited dental coverage for specific medical needs — but routine dental care is not included.

What’s Covered Under SHIP (UHCSR)

SHIP does not cover routine dental care such as checkups, cleanings, or fillings.

However, it does include coverage for certain medical or emergency dental needs:

  • Injury to sound, natural teeth (not from eating)
  • Fractures or dislocations of the jaw or facial bones
  • Removal of impacted teeth
  • Tumor removal from the jaw
  • Orthognathic surgery for serious functional issues
  • Dental care in a hospital setting when medically necessary (e.g., for hemophilia)
  • Pediatric dental services for students under age 19 (as required by law)

Paying for Dental Insurance

Dental insurance is an optional benefit and is not included in the financial aid or funding package for most students.

PhD Students

Eligible unionized PhD students in the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, School of Engineering, and Fletcher School receive dental insurance coverage as part of their union benefits package.

Coverage for dependents, if elected, requires an additional premium paid by the student.
