Understanding "In-Network"
In-network providers (also called preferred providers) are doctors, hospitals, and other healthcare professionals who have agreed to provide care at discounted rates through your insurance plan.
Using in-network providers helps you:
- Pay less out of pocket
- Avoid having to file claims yourself
- Reduce billing surprises
Out-of-network providers may cost much more — and in some cases, may not be covered at all.
In-Network Providers
In-network providers include:
- Primary care doctors and pediatricians
- Specialists (e.g., dermatologists, OB/GYNs, cardiologists)
- Hospitals and urgent care centers
- Mental health and behavioral health professionals
- Labs, imaging centers, and physical therapists
Your plan uses two networks depending on where you are:
- Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Network in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine
- UnitedHealthcare Options PPO and United Behavioral Health outside that region
