Where to Get Care

With your Tufts Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP), you have several options for getting care — depending on your needs:

For a quick overview, watch the Where to Get Care Video.

Understanding "In-Network"

In-network providers (also called preferred providers) are doctors, hospitals, and other healthcare professionals who have agreed to provide care at discounted rates through your insurance plan.

Using in-network providers helps you:

  • Pay less out of pocket
  • Avoid having to file claims yourself
  • Reduce billing surprises

Out-of-network providers may cost much more — and in some cases, may not be covered at all.

In-Network Providers

In-network providers include:

  • Primary care doctors and pediatricians
  • Specialists (e.g., dermatologists, OB/GYNs, cardiologists)
  • Hospitals and urgent care centers
  • Mental health and behavioral health professionals
  • Labs, imaging centers, and physical therapists

Your plan uses two networks depending on where you are:

  • Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Network in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine
  • UnitedHealthcare Options PPO and United Behavioral Health outside that region
