Using Your Coverage While Abroad

If you’re enrolled in the Tufts Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP), you’re covered worldwide — whether you’re studying abroad or traveling. You remain covered as long as you are enrolled in SHIP and continue to meet eligibility requirements. Note: Tufts on-campus health services are not available while you’re abroad, but you can access care through SHIP’s worldwide provider network.

What’s Covered While You’re Abroad

Your SHIP plan provides the same benefits abroad as in the U.S., including:

  • Doctor visits and hospital stays
  • Emergency services
  • Mental health care
  • Prescription medications
  • Medical evacuation in emergencies

You also have access to UnitedHealthcare Global Assistance Services, which include:

  • Referrals to trusted doctors and hospitals abroad
  • Pre-trip health and safety information
  • Emergency travel support and coordination

UnitedHealthcare Global Assistance

While traveling outside the U.S., you can contact UnitedHealthcare Global for help:

Getting Care While Abroad

  • Always carry your SHIP insurance ID card while traveling.
  • Some international providers may require you to pay for services upfront.
  • Save all receipts and paperwork from your visit — you’ll need them to request reimbursement.

How to Get Reimbursed

If you paid out of pocket for care abroad, you can submit a claim for reimbursement.  Learn how on the How to Use Your Insurance page.

Extra Support for Tufts Study Abroad Students

If you’re participating in a Tufts Global Education program, you may also have access to additional global medical assistance and travel support at no extra cost.
