Move Out and Move In Information
Move Out Information
Students who are not graduating in May are required to move out 24 hours after their last final exam or by 12PM on Saturday, May 10, whichever comes first.
Graduating students are required to move out by 12PM on Monday, May 19.
Please plan accordingly when making travel arrangements.
Students who do not complete the check-out process and vacate by the deadlines noted above will be charged a $150.00 improper check out fee and an additional $50.00 per day for each additional day they are on campus. The residence halls are used throughout the summer, so our facilities, custodial, and operations teams all rely on you to check out on time to do their work.
Please return your key to any key drop box* on campus. Please be sure to properly label your key envelope with your name, ID number, and room assignment. Failure to do so may result in a lock change fee of $75 for each key not returned. Drop boxes are located:
- Residential Life & Learning - 120 Packard Ave
- Carmichael Hall lobby
- Harleston Hall lobby
- Hillside Apartments (laundry room between 20s and 30s towers)
- Hodgdon Hall lobby
- Tufts University Police – Dowling Hall
- 1023 Beacon St.
- 1025 Beacon St.
- 1047 Beacon St.
*Latin Way Residents: Latin Way will be used for summer housing and the building must be turned over quickly when the spring semester ends. To help us prepare for incoming summer residents, you must return your keys to 120 Packard Ave. If you return your keys to another drop box elsewhere on campus, you will be charged lock change fees.
You are not required to return your Tufts ID and residence hall access will be ended based on your approved departure date.
Some students have extenuating circumstances that require them to extend their stay on campus past May 10. If you are participating in a Tufts program that requires you to stay on campus after May 10, your program leader will communicate with Residential Life and Learning (RLL) regarding your extended stay. Please do not complete an extended stay request form; please confirm with your program leader that you were included on the list they sent to RLL.
Students who are part of the following groups should NOT submit an extended stay request:
- Graduating students
- Resident Assistants
- Student athletes competing in a spring varsity sport
- Tufts in Tailliores
- Hillel Birthright
- Pre-Orientation Coordinators
- Dining student staff
- Alumni Engagement student staff
- Conference & Event Services student staff
- Summer Housing Residents
If you do not see your Tufts program listed above, please contact your program leader and ask them to contact RLL.
If you need to request an extended stay but are not participating in a Tufts program, please submit an Extended Stay Request form through your Housing Portal by 5PM on Tuesday, April 15. Requests will be reviewed by RLL staff and approved or denied. Approved requests received between 5PM Tuesday, April 15 and 5PM on Thursday, May 1 will incur a $50.00 late fee. Extended stay requests received after 5PM on May 1 may not be considered.
Tufts Facilities and Office of Sustainability are here to help make move-out easy and low-waste! Donation and recycling stations are now open on the Medford/Somerville campus to divert usable goods from the landfill. Visit the stations at Houston Hall, Hill Hall, Lewis Hall, and Harleston Hall to donate your unwanted, gently used dorm items, school supplies, kitchenware, clothing, and more. See the full list of accepted donations that will be given to future Jumbos and community members! We encourage you to start sorting what you will keep, donate, and recycle early to make moving out easier.
Tufts University is working with Dorm Room Movers to provide storage and shipping options to residential students. Please visit Tufts’ Dorm Room Movers page for more information about packing, pick up, delivery, and cost.
If you store items with Dorm Room Movers, please consider that DRM might not be able to deliver your items to campus the same day that you move in for fall 2025, especially if you’re approved to arrive early. Please pack accordingly if you will need bedding or other linens immediately upon your arrival in August/September.
Off-campus transition housing is available for students who have a local lease starting on June 1. Students should request transition housing using the Off-Campus Transition Housing request form in their Housing Portal. Please submit a transition housing request through your Housing Portal by 5PM on Tuesday, April 15. Requests will be approved on a first come, first served basis as limited spaces are available. Approved requests received after 5PM on April 15 will incur a $50.00 late fee in addition to the total cost of housing. Transition housing requests received after 5PM on Thursday, May 1 may not be considered and if they are considered and approved, additional late fees may apply.
Transition housing is available from May 20 to June 2. The cost for transition housing is $700 and cannot be pro-rated for students who move out before June 2. Students who apply for transition housing will be assigned to a double room in Bush Hall with a roommate; moving to Bush from your spring assignment on May 20 is required.
If you’re staying on campus for the summer or in transition housing until June 2, please consider that you will have to move from your spring housing assignment to your summer housing assignment on/around Tuesday, May 20. Please plan travel, work, and other commitments accordingly. Our facilities, custodial, and operations teams commit a significant effort to planning and executing the transition from spring to summer housing and need your full cooperation when it is time to move from your spring to summer housing.
If you’re staying on campus for the summer and cannot move from your spring to summer assignment on/around May 20, please move out completely by 12PM on May 10.
Students/their guest(s) who is helping them move out can park their vehicle in a loading zone close to their residence hall while actively packing belongings into their vehicle. Vehicles should be in the loading zone for a limited amount of time and will be ticketed and/or towed if they appear to be parked and unattended for an extended period (20 minutes or more). Please follow instructions from Parking Enforcement and Tufts University Police if you’re asked to move tour vehicle to another location. Parking tickets are the responsibility of the driver.
Please note that the Boston Ave. parking lot behind Hill Hall (entrance from University Ave.) will be open to traffic for loading vehicles during move out. Please pay careful attention to posted signage when using the Boston Ave. parking lot and do not park in the lot, only use it as a loading zone.
Before or after loading your vehicle, please park in the Dowling Garage purchasing a day pass, if you do not already have another type of parking pass for your vehicle that allows you to park in the Dowling Garage. More information about parking permits is available online: https://access.tufts.edu/parking-permits You can purchase a parking pass here: https://tufts.aimsparking.com/

Much planning and organization goes into move in; Residential Life, Residential Facilities and C&W Cleaning plan many details in advance to make move in a great experience for all Tufts students. We need students’ consideration and cooperation to help everything run smoothly. Students who arrive prior to their approved arrival date may not be able to move in, especially if their space is not ready, and they will need to find alternate housing off campus. If their space is ready early, they may be able to move in and will be charged a $150.00 improper check in fee and $50/night for each night that they occupy their space prior to their approved arrival date.
