Move Out and Move In Information
Move Out Information
Students who do not have a Spring 2025 housing assignment must move out of their Fall 2024 housing assignment not more than 24 hours after their last final exam or by 12PM on Saturday, December 21, 2024, whichever comes first.
All students can load their vehicle in front of their residence hall for a brief period while moving out. Parking is not permitted in loading zones. There will be loading grace periods during move out when drivers will not be ticketed in front of residence halls. Drivers should move their car to the Dowling Garage (419 Boston Ave., Medford, MA) when they are not actively loading their vehicle and purchase a parking permit.
Loading/parking is not permitted in spots designated for employee parking permits. Please pay close attention to posted signage. All parking citations are the responsibility of the driver.
Students who do not move out by 12PM on December 21 will be charged a $150.00 improper check out fee and an additional $50.00 per day for each additional day they are on campus and/or that their belongings occupy their Fall 2024 assignment. It is extremely likely that another student will move into that bed space in January and Residential Life, Residential Facilities, and C&W Cleaners need time during winter break to prepare rooms for new students moving in for the spring semester.
Please remove all personal belongings from your room, apartment, common spaces in your residence hall, etc. Items left behind after move out will be thrown away and students who leave items behind may be charged improper check out and/or cleaning fees. Items left in residential spaces are not considered donations; donations must be brought to a donation station.
Returning Your Key, If Applicable
Please return your key to a key drop box on campus. Please be sure to properly label your key envelope with your name, ID number, and room assignment. Failure to do so may result in a lock change fee of $75.00/key. Please do not return your key to any other drop box on campus; only use the drop boxes listed below. Drop boxes are located:
- Residential Life & Learning - 120 Packard Ave
- 1023 Beacon St.
- 1025 Beacon St.
- 1047 Beacon St.
You are not required to return your Tufts ID and residence hall access will be ended based on your move out date.
MicroChill
If you rented a MicroChill unit, please leave your MicroChill in your room. RLL will coordinate with Residential Facilities and MicroChill to remove your unit from your room. Please defrost and clean your MicroChill unit before your departure. You should start defrosting your MicroChill about 48 hours before you leave campus; unplug your unit, leave the door open slightly and place a towel on the floor to absorb any water that might drip.
If you leave food in your MicroChill/refrigerator or additional cleaning is required after you leave campus, you may be charged a cleaning fee.
Sustainability
Facilities and the Office of Sustainability provide locations to donate usable items and recycle hard-to-recycle materials all year long! Avoid putting items in the landfill to help reduce pollution and carbon emissions. Use the eco-map to find the closest donation or recycling station to you. Remember, you can donate:
- Clothing
- Shoes
- Bedding
- Books
- Non-perishable food (Dewick food pantry)
You can recycle:
- Electronics and plastic bags in designated bins
- Cardboard in regular mixed recycling bins

Mail Services
Please plan to pick up all mail and packages before you leave campus. Please change your address and do not have mail or packages shipped to campus while you’re away. Mail Services and Residential Life are not able to forward mail to former residents.
Move In Information
New Fletcher Students Attending Orientation
Fletchers students attending Orientation on Tuesday, January 7 can move in on Monday, January 6. Please check in at Residential Life & Learning (120 Packard Ave., Medford, MA 02155) between 10AM and 4PM. After 4PM, please check in at Tufts University Police Department on the ground floor of Dowling Hall, 419 Boston Ave., Medford, MA 02155. New students will also pick up their Tufts ID at check in.
All Other Graduate Students and Undergraduate Students
The residence halls reopen at 10AM on Sunday, January 12. Please check in at Residential Life & Learning (120 Packard Ave., Medford, MA 02155) between 10AM and 4PM. After 4PM, please check in at Tufts University Police Department on the ground floor of Dowling Hall, 419 Boston Ave., Medford, MA 02155.
If you have ever been issued a Tufts ID, please be sure to bring your ID with you to check in. If your residence hall room requires a key, you can pick up your key at check in.
Please check your Housing Portal to review your housing assignment.
Much planning and organization goes into move in; Residential Life, Residential Facilities and C&W Cleaning plan many details in advance to make move in a great experience for all Tufts students. We need students’ consideration and cooperation to help everything run smoothly. Students who arrive prior to their approved arrival date may not be able to move in, especially if their space is not ready, and they will need to find alternate housing off campus. If their space is ready early, they may be able to move in and will be charged a $150.00 improper check in fee and $50/night for each night that they occupy their space prior to their approved arrival date.
Parking and Unloading during Move In
When students check in at 120 Packard, please park temporarily on Packard Ave. Please look for and review posted signage and park only where parking is permitted. Any parking citations issued by Tufts University, the City of Medford or Somerville are the responsibility of the driver.
After check in, students can proceed to the unloading zone in front of their residence hall. We ask that residents and their families use the unloading zone strictly for unloading rather than for parking so that other residents moving in also have space close to the residence halls to unload. Unattended cars left in unloading zones will be ticketed. Please do not unload or park in spaces designated employee permit parking.
After your car is unloaded, please move your car to the Dowling Garage (419 Boston Ave., Medford, 02155) and purchase a parking permit.
If you take public transportation to campus, please use the Medford/Tufts stop on the green E line which is next to the Joyce Cummings Center.
Shipping & Storage
Tufts University is working with Dorm Room Movers to provide storage and shipping options to residential students. Please visit Tufts’ Dorm Room Movers page for more information about packing, pick up, delivery, and cost.
Leaves of Absence
If you leave the University, for any reason, you need to complete the room check-out process.
- If you take a leave of absence, you will need to remove all personal items from your assigned room within 48 hours of the effective date of leave. If you don’t remove personal items by the deadline, we will hire professional movers to pack and ship items to your permanent address at your expense.
- We do not assume responsibility for any personal items left in your university housing assignment, or for the safety and security of personal belongings being packed or shipped.
