Election Day 2024

This page contains information regarding various ways we encourage students to spend Election Day 2024.

No classes are held on election day in the School of Arts and Sciences, the School of Engineering, or the SMFA at Tufts.  Students are encouraged to use the day to participate in and celebrate civic life. Jumbo Vote advocated for this change with the faculty committee that sets the academic calendar; election day 2024 is the first time election day will have no classes held.

Similarly, the NCAA requires that varsity athletes get a day off from practice and competition so they can vote, host events, and otherwise participate in civic life on All Vote No Play Day.

Vote

  • If you are registered to vote at your local/campus address, you can vote in person. You can check your registration status and find your polling location on TurboVote.
  • If you voted by mail before election day, you can check the status of your ballot online.
  • If you are voting by mail and haven’t completed your ballot yet, complete it today.  Take it to a post office in person to make sure it is postmarked on election day.

Work the Polls

Medford, Somerville, Cambridge, Boston, Brookline, and Arlington are all recruiting people to work at the polling locations on election day.  Responsibilities generally include checking in voters, passing out ballots for voters to complete, and tallying or safeguarding completed ballots. No previous experience is needed and training is provided.  Most municipalities pay a small stipend to poll workers. It’s a great way to directly participate in democracy!

Volunteer for a Campaign

On election days, most campaigns have “get out the vote” operations designed to remind people to vote or assist them as they make plans to vote. Campaign volunteers could do things like calling voters to remind them to vote, providing childcare or coordinating transportation so voters can get to their polling location, or helping with exit polling.

Celebrate Civic Life

There will be celebrations and watch parties on campus throughout the day. Student organizations are encouraged to host election-related events. Logistical support is available from the Office of Campus Life.
