Jumbo Spring Break

Make new friendships, build connections, and get involved in civic engagement this March with Jumbo Spring Break!

Jumbo Spring Break 2026

Jumbo Spring Break is the trip of a lifetime! You will make friends, have a very unique experience, and be a difference maker in a local community. Past participants have described JSB as “life-changing."

JSB 2026 takes place during the university spring break, from March 14 to 22. There are two travel days, five days of construction volunteering, and two excursion/fun days. This year, Jumbo Spring Break will be in Hawaii.

The Project

There is a housing affordability crisis throughout Hawaii, which was exacerbated by wildfires in 2023, and we will partner with families to build safe, affordable housing. Based on the ideas that housing is a human right and that all of us working together in community can contribute what we are able to each other, our week will involve hands-on construction at a Habitat for Humanity build site.  You may find yourself installing siding, painting, putting up drywall, or doing other building work. No construction experience or knowledge required; training and equipment will be provided.

The Cultural and Social Experiences

After the build day is finished, you can expect evenings filled with group dinners, local culture, sightseeing, and social events. In addition, excursion days allow for additional time to experience the culture and recreation opportunities. Participants will have a voice in shaping the trip experience by deciding on some of the activities we’ll do together.

You can feel confident you are going on a trip with friends, even if you are signing up solo.

There will be a pre-trip retreat and meetings where we will all get to know each other, plan the trip together, and decide how to make the most of the experience. On JSB 2024 and JSB 2025, most participants did not know anyone on the trip before signing up.

Cost is estimated at around $1800 per person; final price to be announced in October. The participation fee includes round trip airfare, lodging, meals, cultural experiences, and excursions. When signing up, each participant will make a deposit of $250 to hold their place. The balance will be due in November. Discounted deposits will be available to people with high levels of financial aid. Group fundraising and scholarship opportunities may be available.

The program size is limited due to the nature of the trip. Applications for participation are considered on a first come, first reviewed basis. As the spots are limited, we encourage students to apply early to secure their spot. The application opens in early October.

Mission

Jumbo Spring Break (JSB) is a program that offers the Tufts community a meaningful and exciting way to spend spring break. JSB is an initiative of the Dean of Students Office. JSB brings Tufts students together for a memorable college experience that will live on in your personal Tufts highlight reel, will make you feel good about the contributions that you made, and can be a formative life experience that informs your future career and civic engagement plans.
