Current Status: Fraternities and Sororities
Student Life publishes the status of all recognized and formerly recognized fraternities and sororities. (The statuses of all other student organizations are published by the Office for Campus Life. Any findings of responsibility and sanctions are included on their List of Organizations next to the name each organization.) We include a summary of the findings of responsibility and sanctions made in student organization cases involving fraternities and sororities in order to provide disclosure to students considering joining a fraternity or sorority and as a way of assisting organizations demonstrate accountability to the larger university community. This information will be updated regularly to reflect the organizations' disciplinary histories and current statuses.
Glossary of Organizational Status Terms
Organization Status describes the organization’s current relationship to Tufts University. Generally organizations are on one of the following statuses:
- In Good Standing: This status describes fraternities or sororities that are officially recognized student organizations, are currently approved by Inter-Greek Council or other appropriate governing council, and are currently permitted to conduct normal operations. Organizations in good standing are expected to abide by all existing University policies.
- Interim Suspension: Interim suspension of an organization may only be imposed if there is evidence or information which appears reliable suggesting that the organization violated a Tufts policy and that interim action is necessary to ensure the safety and well-being of members of the University community or preservation of University property, or if the organization poses an ongoing threat of disruption of, or interference with, the normal operation of the University. See the Student Conduct Resolution Procedure for more information about interim suspension.
- Disciplinary Probation: An organization is not in good standing with the University after having been found responsible for serious violations of University policy or subsequent violations after prior disciplinary action. Violations of the terms of Disciplinary Probation, which are specified in the chapter’s outcome letter, or any new violations of University policy while the chapter is on probation may result in the revocation of the organization’s recognition. Organizations on disciplinary probation are permitted to conduct operations as usual unless additional modifications to operating status are made in the chapter outcome letter.
- Suspension: Suspension of student organization recognition is the temporary termination of the University's recognition of a student organization. While a student organization is suspended, it may not exercise any of the benefits of recognition, including the use of University facilities, the use of the University's name or logo, the use of the University's electronic resources (including web hosting), access to University funds or banking, bulletin board and room reservations, etc. See the Student Conduct Resolution Procedure for more information about suspension.
- Revocation of Recognition: Revocation of recognition is the permanent termination of the University's recognition of a student organization. If recognition is permanently revoked, a student organization is not permitted to return to recognized status at any time, in any capacity. See the Student Conduct Resolution Procedure for more information about revocation of recognition.
Participation in recruitment describes whether or not the organization is currently approved to recruit new members for the upcoming recruitment cycle. Organizations who are eligible may participate in recruitment activities, host recruitment events, extend invitations to join organizations, and initiate new members. Eligibility to participate in recruitment activities may be conditioned on supervision or other contingencies. Organizations who are not eligible to recruit may not formally or informally host events designed to recruit members, formally or informally extend invitations to join the organization, ask students to defer participating in another recruitment process, or initiate new members.
Recent disciplinary history is included for organizations found responsible for violations of the Tufts Student Code of Conduct or other policies and for organizations with a serious case currently pending that has resulted in an interim suspension. Cases in which an adjudication resulted in a finding of not responsible and pending cases that have not resulted in interim suspensions are not listed. Disciplinary history is listed by policies violated because describing the exact circumstances of any particular incident could identify individuals involved in that incident. It is important to understand that the degree and severity of each policy violation are taken into account during sanctioning, so two violations of the same policy often result in different sanctions. In accordance with the Student Conduct Resolution Procedure, previous findings are taken into consideration when determining sanctions.
Active or Non-Active Organizations describes whether or not the organization is currently recognized and allowed to operate at Tufts University. There are currently nine (9) active organizations: ATO of Massachusetts, Chi Omega, Kappa Alpha Theta, The Ivy, Thalia, Delta Tau Delta, Theta Chi, Delta Upsilon and Zeta Beta Tau.

These findings of responsibility resulted in a Reprimand; a requirement to increase accountability during the new member program through weekly meetings with New Member Educators and the OFSL, Chapter Advisor presence at certain new member events, and Executive Board oversight at all new member events. These findings also resulted in required improvements and oversight in risk management procedures for chapter events and other sanctions meant to promote education and safety. 2. Found responsible for hazing, alcohol policy violations, sexual harassment, and academic integrity policy violations in June 2017 via an Administrative Resolution. These findings of responsibility resulted in disciplinary suspension (expired June 6, 2017), two years of disciplinary probation, effective June 7, 2017 to June 7, 2019; a requirement to revise recruitment and new member plan; a requirement that no alcohol is permitted at chapter social events for a specified period of time; requirements for all members to receive training on hazing prevention, bystander intervention, and a variety of other topics; and other sanctions meant to promote education and safety. 3. Found responsible for failure to comply with a University official and violation of social event policy (presence of alcohol at an alcohol-free event) in November 2018 via an Administrative Decision. These findings of responsibility resulted in the chapter's period of disciplinary probation (original ending June 7, 2019) being extended to December 31, 2019; a requirement that the chapter may not host or co-host any social event with non-members, effective October 9, 2018 through December 21, 2018; a requirement that no alcohol is permitted for events hosted at the chapter house from January 1 through June 30, 2019; a requirement that any large social event held between January 1 and June 30, 2019 include third-party security or TUPD event details; a written apology letter to TUPD; a requirement that the back porch of the chapter house be used for regress only; a requirement that the chapter send at least three representative to training in risk management by OFSL. 4. Found responsible for guest and gathering restrictions and gatherings of 10+ via administrative decision in March of 2021. These findings resulted in Disciplinary Probation through December 2021; a requirement for gatherings to take place in approved on-campus locations and restricting activities occurring in the house; a COVID policy discussion and agreement signed by all members; a two-part Leadership Series focused on accountability, organizational leadership, establishing boundaries and limits, and group behavior; and a historical transition document for the incoming e-Board that outlined historical concerns, lessons learned, and recommendations for the future and continued success of the organization. |

Specific students currently residing in the chapter house are authorized to reside in the chapter house until May 2018 provided that they meet certain social and safety restrictions. Following the suspension, the chapter may petition to resume operations if it meets specified conditions. Upon return from suspension, the chapter will be on disciplinary probation for a one-year period and will not be permitted to have alcohol in the chapter house for a specified period. Additionally, the chapter will be required to complete a membership review, to host a Community Development Advisor in the chapter house, to revise the recruitment and new member education processes, and to complete other sanctions meant to promote education and safety. Found responsible for disorderly conduct; physical abuse and reckless endangerment; and inaction in an alcohol-related medical emergency in June 2019 via an Administrative Decision. These findings of responsibility resulted in disciplinary suspension until September 1, 2022 and the loss of privileges at the chapter house for the duration of the suspension. Following the suspension, the chapter may petition to resume operations if it meets specified conditions. If approved to return from suspension, the chapter will be on disciplinary probation for a one-year period, will have the opportunity to regain use of the house in September 2023, and a Residential Life student staff member will be placed in any chapter facility used by Delta Upsilon. Additionally, no alcohol will be permitted in the chapter house at any time for any reason effective for one year from the date the chapter returns, and the chapter will be expected to complete several educational measures. DU has returned to campus and is in good standing having completed educational measures as of Spring 2023. |

The chapter’s recruitment in Spring 2018 will permit the chapter to recruit only those with sophomore status and above and require the group to initiate immediately upon offer of membership with no new member education period. Sanctions also include a requirement to revise recruitment and new member plans, a requirement to host a Community Development Advisor in any future chapter housing, requirements for all members to receive training on hazing prevention, bystander intervention, and a variety of other topics, and other sanctions meant to promote education and safety. 2. Found responsible for alcohol policy, social event registration policy, fraternity and sorority social event policy violations in December 2022 via an Administrative Resolution. These findings of responsibility resulted in being placed on disciplinary probation until December 22, 2023 and received a suspension of social events while on disciplinary probation. Sanctions also included leadership training, creation of a communication plan and internal review, social event education, a leadership series, and two group conversations around organizational ideals and planning for the future. |

Additional sanctions included creating a historical transition document, creating an annual leadership series for all members, completing an annual executive board leadership series, completing Green Dot Training sessions, and completing a Social Event Training with their national office. |

Upon returning from suspension, the Pi Rho Omega is sanctioned to probation for a period of one year. During the first four months of the probation period, Pi Rho Omega is prohibited from organizing, co-organizing, hosting, or co-hosting any social event. After the four-month period, any social event must be registered according to OFSL policy and include use of a OFSL-approved, third-party vendor if alcohol is present at the event location. 2. Found responsible for hazing, alcohol policy violations, Code of Conduct violations, and sexual harassment in June 2017 via an Administrative Resolution. This finding of responsibility resulted in probation, effective until December 2017, a requirement to revise recruitment and new member plan, requirements for all members to receive training on hazing prevention, bystander intervention, and a variety of other topics, and other sanctions meant to promote education and safety. All sanctions stipulated in the Administrative Resolution, including requirements to obtain a member of the Residence Life staff in the chapter house, remain in effect after the period of suspension ends. |

These findings of responsibility resulted in suspension, effective until September 25, 2018. As a result of the suspension, all chapter members were required to vacate the chapter house by January 2018 and to receive training on hazing prevention, bystander intervention, and a variety of other topics. Following the suspension, the chapter may petition to resume operations if it meets specified conditions. Upon return from suspension, the chapter is on disciplinary probation for two years. Additionally, the chapter is required to complete a membership review, to be alcohol-free housing for five years, to host a Community Development Advisor in any chapter housing, to have chapter leaders live in the chapter house, to revise recruitment and new member education, and to complete other sanctions meant to promote education and safety. 4. Found responsible for having alcohol present at a new member event in October 2018 via an Administrative Decision. This finding of responsibility resulted in the chapter's period of disciplinary probation (original ending September 26, 2020) being extended to September 26, 2021; a requirement that the chapter compose and submit a revised new member on-boarding plan; a requirement that the chapter identify and implement training for chapter leaders that will take place on an annual basis. 5. Found responsible for failure to comply with a university official resolved through administrative decision in August 2020. This finding extended their disciplinary probation through September 2022; required the development of a communication plan to dissemination information to members as well as strategies for the future; a group dialogue for the entire chapter regarding the future of the organization, expectations, requirements, and strategies for success; the prohibition of alcohol through the duration of the period of probation at all social events at the house with a required signed agreement by all members of their understanding and agreement to comply. 6. Found responsible for hosting or attending large gatherings, failure to comply with approval and requirements for theme, special interest house, and FSL events, and failure to record accurate meeting attendance via administrative decision in April 2021. These findings resulted in a permanent revocation of the recognition of the chapter at Tufts. |
