Loan Repayment Assistance Program (LRAP)

The Tufts Loan Repayment Assistance Program (LRAP) offers financial awards decided by a committee from each of the Tufts schools. The committees consider income, level of indebtedness, and the overall need of eligible applicants. The size and number of awards offered depends on the total number of eligible applications received and the amount of funding that is available. Awards will vary each year as they are based on the indebtedness and income levels of the applicant pool.

All Tufts graduates with undergraduate, graduate, or professional degrees, who have educational loans incurred for the purpose of attending Tufts as certified by the Financial Aid Office at Tufts, and who are employed full time by a public sector or nonprofit  organization are eligible to apply for the LRAP. Certificate programs do not qualify.

Applicants must reapply each year. Not every applicant will receive an award, and receiving an award in one year does not guarantee you will receive an award in subsequent years.

LRAP should not be confused with loan forgiveness, as award amounts are made to assist in the repayment of a portion of the award recipient's annual loan payments.

Tufts LRAP is structured so that awards should not be taxable, pursuant to special federal income tax rules that apply to the discharge of student loan debt (26 U.S.C. § 108(f)). In accordance with this provision, Tufts LRAP awards are made in the form of loans which are forgiven when the award recipient completes at least nine months of continued public service employment for the specified period.
